We've always known that our House of Style co-host has killer hair, but now it's official! In a story that ran this morning, The New York Times proclaimed Karlie Kloss to have THE haircut of the year, and who's going to argue with that? The supermodel surprised everyone when she debuted her new 'do backstage at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in November, trading her long locks for a swinging chop. But although it seemed like a spontaneous decision back then, turns out Karlie's cut was a long time coming. NYT reports that VOGUE had approached hairstylist Garren Defazio about doing a special style for an upcoming story, and he immediately knew that he wanted the 20-year-old to showcase his new shape. Inspired by '60s icons like Jane Birkin, the just-below-chin-length cut would let the model's damaged hair become healthy again AND give her a cool new edge. In an industry where long hair lends to a "blank canvas" look, Defazio says “I gave her a personality by cutting it.” Mission accomplished, don't you think?
The secret comes from an easy, tousled Alexa Chung-esque fringe that's low-maintenance enough for everyday, yet versatile enough to slick back for special occasions. As Defazio notes, “I cut it to encourage her natural wave...It’s long enough so she can gel it back, and it’s modern because it’s airy and rumpled. Short hair is in.” And considering our New Year's resolutions are still fresh in our minds, the beginning of 2013 is the PERFECT time to switch it up (hey, Kylie Minogue clearly think so!).
Bottom line: a really good short haircut can signify tons of things, whether it's a post-breakup recovery, a resolution, whatever. But at the end of the day, it's just hair. So why not take the plunge? We're already tempted...
